The three years it took to make this piece is due to every single bit of grass being painted 'blade by blade' - in person, the lawn portrays a commanding amount of the viewers attention as it stands in stark contrast to Rice's grandmother, how the merticulous care of her lawn tells us as much about her character as it does about Edward himself. Edward Hopper's work is also a major influence on Rice's style of "straight-forward realism".

This mural was created to be part of the Spanish Pavilion at the International Exposition in Paris in 1937. The mural would remain in the hands of New York's Museum of Modern Art until 1981. In an interesting cross between film and painting, the movie Children of Men features a scene in which the Battersea power station includes the Guernica mural in an interesting meta-commentary both on the plot of that movie and also heavily infers that Britain stole the mural from Spain in the events leading up to that film.
